Keeping it Wheat-free, Alternative Product Finds

"Where do you get all your wheat free products from?"

Lately, this has been a question I get regularly asked, as colleagues and acquaintances take in the view of my pantry or lunch bag.

Cookies, waffles, bagels, pastries galore

Wraps, crackers, baking flour and counter flour
Nom Nom and there’s still much more

"In the supermarkets" I reply.

"Here??"

I laugh; their disbelief being quite understandable.  Truth is, most of these supermarkets did not actively carry a range of wheat free or gluten free alternative products till this year.  This had been left up to the specialty stores who had been rather merciless with their mark-ups.

With the gluten free diet finding disciples even here on the Rock, coupled with what appears to be an increase in wheat allergy and gluten intolerance diagnosis, there has been increased demand for wheat free and gluten free alternatives.  Slowly, the supermarkets have been answering.

I found Glutino brand products in John R. Wong supermarket in New Kingston, Lee’s Supermarket in Pembroke Hall, Sovereign Supermarket in Liguanea and HiLo Supermarket in Portmore Pines.  Late this summer, I went into each of these stores for something else and stumbled upon yumminess. A quick kudos to the Purchasing Team ^_^.  Here is a short list of a few of the Glutino products I first purchased on my visits to these supermarkets:

HiLo Portmore Pines:
Pasta - Penne - (Product Page)
Double Chocolate Brownie Mix - (Product Page)

Sovereign Supermarket in Liguanea:
Double Chocolate Brownie Mix - (Product Page)

John R. Wong Supermarket in New Kingston:
Chocolate Chip Cookies - (Product Page)
New York Style Plain Bagels - (Product Page)

The supermarkets also carry Baking Mixes, Muffins, Chips, Crackers, Crisps and more from the Glutino Gluten-Free Pantry Line.

  2. Very informative. It would naturally be surprising for locations carrying wheat-free goods to be available in Jamaica. Thankfully we are catching up to the first world in this respect.
