The Christmas Class Party

And just like that 2013 is almost over...and with it, the first school term (semester). For some kids and high schoolers this means it's Christmas Class Party time.

With so many children being diagnosed with coeliac (celiac) disease, wheat allergy, gluten sensitivity as well as those voluntarily opting for a gluten free or wheat free diet, sometimes the usual menu has to be scrapped. There are many options available - whether on a shoestring budget or planning for a royal feast.

The typical class party will have a menu of Pizza, Chips, Cake, Ice Cream, Pastries and Candy. The gluten free and wheat free parties may have these also:

Pizza
  • Daiya (Fire-Roasted Vegetable, Mushroom & Roasted Garlic, Margherita or Cheeze Lover's)
  • Udi's Gluten Free (Pepperoni, Three Cheese or Margherita)
  • Udi's Gluten Free Pizza Crust

Tacos

  • Note: use fresh herbs and spices on meat (chicken, pork, beef, fish, lamb, goat) as some spice mixes use wheat flour to prevent clumping. For cheese, avoid Roquefort, blue cheese and string/spray cheese as these may contain gluten.  Cheddar and Edam are often good choices.

Marshmallows
  • Marshmallows are rarely, if ever, made with wheat/gluten  but it is important to check the labels for allergy information as the facilities might utilize other ingredients on the same machinery

Banana Chips
  • Homemade is always the safest, however there are several brands

IMPORTANT: For several brands, the manufacturers have advised that while at the date the information was released the products were identified as gluten free/wheat free, the possibility exists that this may change. As such, it is important to always check labels for allergy information or ingredients. For Breyers and Haagen Dazs, the allergen e.g. "wheat" will be clearly stated in the ingredients. Some brands, such as La Yogurt, Skittles and Betty Crocker Frosting, have a "Gluten Free" statement on the label.
